HISTORY

Bauang Baggak Choir was formed sometime in February 2005 after Mayor Eulogio Clarence Martin P. de Guzman III of the Municipal Government of Bauang, La Union initiated municipal development programs on the promotion of culture, music and arts in the municipality of Bauang.

In line with the said program, the municipal government hired the services of a music consultant in the person of Ms. Leah Dumuk-Bontogon. The concept was to form a choir composed mainly of municipal employees. Auditions were then conducted and the chorale group which was composed originally of 21 members

The chorale group was aptly called Bauang Baggak Choir as during the time when it was being conceptualized, Baggak was the word with which Bauang was associated. “Baggak” is an Ilocano word which means “morning star”.

Ms. Leah Bontogon conducted a formal training and voice lessons to the group. In her desire to come up with a better singing prowess of the group, Ms. Bontogon engaged the services of her spouse Mr. Regie T. Bontogon for free. After sometime, Sir Reggie was hired by the municipal government as music consultant as well. Sir Reggie and Ma’am Leah are graduates of UST Conservatory of Music with a degree in Bachelor of Music major in Music Education and Voice. The dedication of the couple inspired the members all the more as they underwent rigorous trainings and a discipline never before experienced by the members. It was tough at first for every lesson was new to them. Sir Regie is the choir conductor and Ma’am Leah is the trainor. With the passion and with the discipline instilled on the members, the choir was able to receive acclamation in all their performances.

During the last 9 years, Baggak Choir had staged 3 successful major concerts which paved the way to its recognition not only in the municipality but also in other places. Part of the proceeds of the said concerts was donated to the church and schools. Baggak’s involvement with charitable works is manifested though their dedications in helping children become happy by giving them a little something during GABAY. These “kitty bags” contain sweets and some food to help indigent children to become a little happier.

Most of the Choir’s invitations to sing come from churches, religious and civic groups. Apart from performing in almost all of the major churches and convents in La Union, Baggak is often asked to perform during important activities of various government agencies. In November 2011 Mother Butler, a prestigious religious group in Manila, invited the choir to sing for the high mass during the feast of the Immaculate Conception at the historical Manila Cathedral. The mass was attended by celebrities and other religious personalities, who after the mass, went out of their way to inquire who this great choir was who just sang during the mass. Try as they may to be humble, the Choir cannot help but beam with happiness with such recognition.

Regular performances of the Choir include barangay patronal fiestas, GABAY mass, weddings, and interment services, to name a few. Members are often invited to sit as judges in various competitions involving music which only shows that the long trainings of members have brought credibility on their capacity as judges.

Baggak won 2nd place in the Regional Chorale Competition staged by the Civil Service Commission Region One on September 2011, a feat unsurpassed to this day by any Chorale Group in La Union. The award was a milestone for Baggak.

In 2013, The group hard works paid off when another blessing come thier way. Bauangeños Association of Hongkong invited the Group to perform in HOngkong, The very First out-of-the Country  performance of the Choir.

They were invited  to perform South Korea last August 2014 during the Taebaek City National Choir Competition at Taebaek City  and October 2015 during the Arirang Festival at Jeongseon County in the Province of Gangwon.

No performance is too big or too small for Baggak Choir. All performances are considered significant and were all rendered with all their hearts and soul, for only with the heart can one sing lovingly and to prove their worth,
